Edition 5 YHE CLARION THE VOICB OF BREVARD COLLEGE STUDENTS Tuesday, November 13,1979 VOLUME 47 Dr. Martinson: ‘Faith Permeates Learning’ by Debbie Willenborg Dr. Martinson has been the President of Brevard College for four years. He seems to have had an interesting life during his college years. He attended the University of St. Andrew for four years where he turned this school around by balancing its budget for the first time in 125 years. From there he decided to come to Brevard. His reason for coming here is that he saw Brevard’s potential, and feels that it is now one of the strongest two year colleges in the nation. According to president Mar tinson, “This year’s eijrollment is the highest ever, with around 700 full-time students.” He feels that this year’s group of freshmen and sophomores is the finest group of students in his 8 years of being a college president. Martinson believes “One’s faith permeates all of learning”, and feels for an all important added dimension to learning, one must consider the whole person. The Germans have a word for this, called “mensch”, meaning “whole man”. In considermg this, one would not turn out a scentific man nor an education- minded man, but a whole man. The job of the committee is to counsel students six consists of: Randy Jackson, Dan Barnett, Clara Wood, Dean Houk, Betty Buck, Tim Murray, Sam Lewis, Larry Whatley, and Rachel Daniel. Mr. Jackson also states that approximately a dozen students have appeared before the committee this semester. The points have ranged from 6 to 12, and the subjects range from parking tickets to stealing. Mr. Jackson stated that most of the committee members feel that points should not be awarded for parking violations. They feel that there are more serious misbehaviors to be dealt with, instead of parking tickets, which just occupy the committee’s time. If a student wants to appeal a decision made by the Con tinuation Committee, they may go in front of the Administration Board. This board consists of President Martinson, Dean Wray, Dean Houk, and Randy J ackson. by Tim Merritt A Funny thing did happen, a very funny thing, but it wasn’t on the way to the forum. It was simply at the Barn Theatre on opening night of The Masquer’s production of Steven Sondheim’s “A Funny Thing Happened On The Way To The Forum.” I must say that I was thoroughly surprised at the class and quality at the prodcution. There were no “opening-night jitters,” nor did the cast allow the play’s rictus nature to drag in the least. The size of the Barn Theatre, and the audience’s resulting proximity, added a social quality and closeness to production, allowing the comedy to communicate directly 0 the audience. Even the smallest gestures and ex pressions (and all the Courtesans had rapport and dialogue between audience and cast added to the hilarity that took place on stage. It won’t like watching a play, but ruler, like performing in one. Musically, the play was equally superb -1 know, I was sitting next to the orchestra. The singing was equally excellent, and the feeling with which the musical numbers were done did away with the “lulls” that unmusical people, such as myself, usually ex perience with musicals. Though the entire cast was outstanding, Loren Mott was particularly noteworthy as Pseudolus as was Jeff Davis as Hysterium. And I would like to especially think all the cour tesans for their rousing (arousing?) performances. To the entire cast, and to the director, Mr. Cope, and to anyone involved in the production, I ould like to say (in a more lommuting Students Lose •resident Barbara Goan X—^ — '.,0U1U imc tw V— - very interesting ones) took thunderous voice than my own) on a significance that would have “bravo,” and congratulations on een lost in a large theater. The “bravo,’ an excellent performance. by Ronnie Chapman The Day Student Club at Brevard College has been an important organization to all day students. The club has given day students who live off campus, an opportunity to become involved in on-campus activities, which help to add that extra feeling of belonging to college life. Elected officers of this year are: Barbara Coan, president; Keith McCoy, vice-president; Steve Hittel, treasurer; and Donna Hooper, secretary. The club also elected representatives and they are Scott Plemmons, Kevin Lusk, Lisa Beebe, Richard Rowe Alan McCrary and Linda President Martinson feels that the difference between church related and non-church related schools is the faculty and staff. He says, “To students, the most important influence is the faculty. They may not remember what they said but will remember who they are.” He feels that if a professor relates well, is con scientious, and loves the students, this will have a tremendous effect on them, no matter the student’s interest. “The faculty,” to President Martinson, “are the strength of Brevard College. They are gifted, talented, responsive, and a student-oriented faculty. ’ ’ Wilgen. The increased number of day students at Brevard College this year warranted an increase in interest in the club itself, which has been meeting regularly on Wednesdays at 10 a.m., in the S.U. The intramural team had been of major importance. Several of the members of the club have registered shock over the recent resignation of club president, Barbara Coan. Details of Miss Coan’s resignation will be reported as they become known. The club, however, still need support from all day students, and would like to urge all con cerned to attend meetings and become involved in college life. Annual Staff Works Hard by Greg Bare “The yearbook staff is working hard to make this year’s year book the best ever at Brevard,” said Scott Singletary, co-editor. The staff met their first deadline October 18. The classes section and part of the ad vertisements has been sent. The next deadline will consist of clubs and organizations on campus. Students who are involved in either of the two are asked to be prompt and courteous. “There are many clubs and organizations on campus to cover and we need as much cooperation as possible. We only have two photographers and everyone will have to be patient,” stated Scott. Any dormitory wanting to place an advertisement in the yearbook should talk to either Scott Singletary, Donna Harriger, or Mrs. Chamlee. Speech Contest To Be Held by Anthony Tinsley Any full time student who expresses a talent for public speaking and wishes to earn some extra money is invited to participate in the Brevard College Oratorical Contest. The final competition will be held in February. If more than five students enter there will be preliminary elimination contests to decide the five finalists. A committee of judges will select a winner who will be awarded a $100.00 Bella Hilands Oratorical Award to be applied toward the cost of tuition for the academic year the award is won. Entry blanks must be filed on or before February 1, 1980 and are available in the Financial Aid Office, and at the receptionist’s desk in Beam Administration building.
